Lecture Title: Negotiating for Asia's Population: Japan in the Transnational Network of Family Planning, Development Aids and Global Health

Abstract:

This lecture will also pay attention to the politics behind certain portrayals of the ‘made-in-Japan’ family planning programs, in particular the positive image that insisted that these Japanese initiatives were based on the country’s success with population control, health advocacy, and economic development immediately after the war, therefore Japan – now a peace-loving nation denuded of the aggressive militarist past and committed to participate in the international effort to raise a living standard of the people in the so-called underdeveloped nations – could provide a model to other Asian nations.
